The One & Only .. Katie Mox

For all my Pretties out there.. I bring you, Katie Mox. Some of you may know her, and if you don’t., get to know her! You can catch her on SPINdustry working for Command PR. Watch her work her magic! She is working for one of the best in the business, Jonathan Cheban & Simon Huck! Katie was so sweet to allow me to interview her!

How did you start out in the PR Business? Did you do any internships, if so with who?
I stumbled upon PR through internships actually while in my senior year of college. I went to fashion school in Los Angeles so naturally most of my internships were within the fashion realm. I worked for designer showrooms like Paper Denim & Cloth and Hugo Boss when a friend of mine mentioned an opportunity with a start-up/ boutique fashion PR firm in Beverly Hills. Like most college students I knew what field I wanted to work in (fashion), but I had no idea which avenue suited me best. It was important to me to take advantage of my time in school to build my resume and gain the confidence needed to go into the “real world”. I completely fell in love with the business and stayed with that firm and the fashion field for almost 5 years before transitioning into events.

What would you say is the best part about your job?
The best part of my job is that I am able to do what I love. I feel very passionate about my work; therefore it never feels like a job.

If you could give advice to those looking to go into the PR field after college what would it be?
My only advice is to take on as many internships as you possibly can! This business is all about relationships and it is extremely important that you start forming those early on in your career. Don’t think about it as working for “free” because experience really is priceless.

What do you consider the perfect Interview outfit?
You want to dress to impress no matter where you are going so do you research before going on an interview and plan your outfit accordingly. If you are interviewing with a corporate firm then traditional interview attire is required (a button up blouse, pencil skirt or slacks) but try to dress it up with a fun broach or headband. If you are interviewing at a small/hip firm you can be a little more creative and show off your personal style… just make sure it is not sexually suggestive or too casual.

Where are your favorite spots to shop in NYC/LA?
I love shopping in the West Village/ Meat Packing district in NYC- Otte, Intermix, and Jeffrey are some of my favs. In LA I enjoy shopping on Robertson Blvd…. but my favorite stores are actually Urban Outfitters, H&M, and American Apparel! :)

Where are your favorite restaurants in NYC?
The great thing about New York City is there is no such thing as a bad restaurant, everywhere you eat it TO DIE for! That being said my favorites are The Spotted Pig, Philippe, and Bill’s Burgers.

What would you say is your fashion style?
It changes with the seasons! In the summer I love to be bohemian with flowy tops, braids, and moccasin boots while in the winter I wear a lot of black miniskirts, blazers and red lipstick.

What are your top 5-10 beauty products?
Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, Burt’s Bees Almond Milk Beeswax Hand Cream, Glymed Plus Cell Science Ultra Hydro Gel, Glymed Plus Photo Age Environmental Protection Gel SPF 15, Nivea A Kiss of Moisture Essential Lip Care, and RetinAngel (prescription only).

What would you say is your MUST-HAVE for this season?
My MUST-HAVE for this season is my puppy Edie, she is my favorite accessory :)

Most people think that the PR business is all about “who you know” as far as getting into the business, what is your opinion? (See answer to question # 3)

How did you like the experience of Spindustry? CAN YOU GUYS COME BACK ON NEXT WEEK :)
I LOVED it!! It was soooooo much fun and I just feel really excited and lucky to be a part of it…stay tuned ;)
